Mental health is weird. I swear sometimes it feels like I was born to break.

Like, before I even knew my own name, something in my body had already decided I’d be the one crying at night for “no reason.”

Have you ever felt like that? Like your pain was preset?

Yeah. I have too.

The Key Takeaway.

Mental health isn’t just vibes and journaling. It’s not just mindset. Sometimes, it’s biology gone wrong. Your own body betrays you. And when people say, “Just pray it away” or “Change your environment,” it’s cute, but it’s giving they’ve never cried for 4 hours over nothing at all.

Genetics.

Because YES, sometimes your ancestors handed you more than just their cheekbones.

So, if mental illness runs in your family, there’s a chance it’s quietly living in you, too. Maybe it hasn’t shown up yet. Maybe it shows up as “mood swings” or “being too emotional” or “why do I always ruin everything?”

Or maybe, it came loud and early.

Some of us were born with storms inside us. Not because God forgot to bless us, but let’s just say because DNA has its own dark sense of humor.

If your mum or uncle or grandpa had depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, your brain may already be preloaded with the blueprint. Not guaranteed. But it is possible.

But then, genetic vulnerability is NOT your fault.

But it’s real. And it matters. And it explains why two people can go through the same heartbreak or failure or trauma and only one ends up spiraling for 3 months.

Brain Chemistry.

Whew. Okay. I know I want to explain this as simply as I can.

So, imagine your brain is a nightclub. Your emotions are the music. The neurotransmitters are the DJ.

So when the DJ’s drunk or just trash at their job, guess what? The vibes are off. The music doesn’t slap. The whole place is… awkward.

Well, that’s what happens when your serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine are low, unstable, or just acting up. These chemicals literally control your mood, your energy, your ability to feel joy or even feel anything at all.

So when your brain is chemically imbalanced, it’s not about being dramatic. It’s not about “overthinking.”

It is about your brain cooking the wrong soup and forcing you to eat it every day.

If you’ve ever woken up heavy? Like… can’t-lift-your-arm heavy? Not from tiredness but from existence? Yeah. That’s chemical. That is not you being weak. That’s your brain misfiring on a Tuesday for no reason.

So How Do They Influence Mental Health?

You can do everything right.

Pray. Meditate. Read the books. Drink the smoothies.

And still feel broken.

Because if your DNA is holding pain and your brain chemistry so off, your healing or mental health won’t look like everybody else’s.

  • You may need more than “positive vibes.” You may need meds. Or therapy. Or both.
  • You may need to forgive yourself for not being okay, even when everything around you looks fine.

That’s what genetics and brain chemistry do:

  • They raise the stakes.
  • They make healing feel like swimming with bricks tied to your feet while everyone else is doing laps.

It’s not just a sad day. It’s a whole system of sadness, passed down, built into your VERY wiring. And people will still say “go for a walk.”

Uhm, can you shut up please?

When your own body makes you suffer, it’s hard not to feel betrayed. But pause. Deep breath. This is not your personality or your fault. This is biology throwing punches and you still showing up. And THAT is powerful. Don’t let anyone reduce that to “being too sensitive.”
