It is quite easy to be in front of your screen for too long. That’s why you need to know how to protect your vision.

So, your eyes don’t get damaged.

Something would always require us to  look at our screen, one way or another.

Like you, for example, you’re reading this article at the moment.

  • That’s the world we live in today.

But, you can still practice safety, while using your:

  • Phone
  • Laptop
  • Computer
  • Tablet
  • Or watching TV

Common tips on how to protect your vision

At some point you’ve probably been told to:

  • Do the 20-20-20 rule, where for every 20 minutes you look at that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Match your screen brightness to your environment.
  • Use proper lighting when working to reduce eye strain.
  • Or to keep your phone at arms length and slightly below your eye level when using it.

These tips are helpful, but there are other effect ways to protect your eyes.

Other ways to protect your vision

A very effective way to protect your vision is to blink regularly.

Thing is, we blink less when we’re focused on screens. Which can make our eyes get dry. It is important to blink regularly, because it helps keep the eyes moist, and not too dry.

Try to blink regularly when you’re on your phone, or in front of any screen.

  • Especially if it’s for long time.

Like,

  • While playing games
  • Reading
  • Working
  • Editing
  • Chatting
  • Scrolling

And so on. It might help to set an alarm on your phone to remind you to blink every few minutes.

Train your eyes

Your eyes have muscles too, and they can benefit from a little training.

Try these exercises to improve your eyesight:

Eye rolling

Gently roll your eyes in a circular motion, clockwise and counterclockwise.

It can improve their flexibility, which is good for them.

Focus shifting

For this one, look at a distant object, then shift your gaze to something that’s closer.

Do this several times, not once.

Blue light filters

You can use them. They are helpful too. But don’t rely on them.

Instead, get a blue light-blocking glasses and always adjust your screen’s color temperature to be warmer.

These two things can give you more protection.

Take small breaks

The 20-20-20 rule is great, but you can’t use just that style. Try to add short, but frequent breaks from screens.

You can:

  • Get up and stretch your body.
  • Walk around for a minute two every 30 minutes.
  • Close your eyes a bit to rest them.
  • You can even stand by your window and check outside.

The goal here is to not look at a screen all the way, but do other things, even if they’re short or quick.

Changing your phone settings too can help protect your vision

Things like,

  • Making the text size bigger on your devices, can help you not strain your eyes too much due to squinting.
  • And turning dark mode on, can reduce the blue light that comes from your screen. So you can read things easier.

Also:

  • Use an air humidifier to keep your house from becoming too dry. Dry air can make you strain your eyes more, which is bad
  • Drink enough water.

Go for eye check ups to protect your vision

Regular eye exams can help you detect any problems early.

  • So, make an appointment to get your eye checked.

Try eye drops

Get yourself a lubricating eye drop to keep your eyes moist, and comfortable whenever you use the screen for a long period.

Take these tips very seriously, and practice them well. You need to protect your vision, and keep your eyes healthy.
