Being a dad with a full-time job is one of the most time-poor, energy-demanding positions a person can be in. You’re constantly giving to work and family, and your own health tends to get what’s left over, which is often not much.
These habits are designed to work in the actual gaps of a busy dad’s day, not the idealised version of it.

The habit most dads put off the longest: going to the doctor

Research consistently shows that men, especially fathers, are significantly less likely to visit a GP, get health screenings, or seek help for mental or physical symptoms. They wait until something is severe. They don’t want to seem like they’re making a fuss. And they also feel that that are too busy. This is the single most impactful health habit for them, yet it’s the most avoided. Getting a regular annual check-up, having your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar monitored, and showing up for age-appropriate cancer screenings, these are what catch the things that exercise and diet can’t prevent alone.

So, dear dad, book the appointment. It takes one phone call.

Easy health habits for fathers with full-time jobs 

Exercise (but squeeze it in)

Let’s be honest, it can be hard to find time to exercise, but you still can. The mistake is that many people think they need hours for that, when they actually don’t. 

As a dad with two full-time jobs (family and work), you can try these quick workouts that are also effective.

Bodyweight exercises:

  • Push-ups
  • Squats 
  • Lunges 
  • Jumping jacks 

You can do these when adverts come on, while you watch TV.

Or you can do lunch break workouts.

You use your lunch break to fit in a quick 15-minute to 20-minute workout.

  • Like a brisk walk or jog.

Time with your kids. Did you know playing with your kids is like a workout too? 

Turn playtime into exercise by playing things like,

  • Basketball 
  • Soccer 
  • Race competitions
  • Tag 

Good meals 

A dad with a full-time job?

Yeah, you definitely need to eat healthy and delicious meals.

But there’s some good news. And it’s that, meal preps don’t have to be hard, expensive, or complicated.

Here are simple ways to help you get started:

1 . Prep meals in advance 

It’ll save you the trouble and make sure you’re eating healthy meals.

2 . Take snacks, but healthy snacks. 

Pack healthy snacks like,

  • Nuts and seeds 
  • Fruits 
  • Salads 
  • Energy bars 
  • And even water 

Also, skip unhealthy snacks from the vending machines. They won’t do much for you anyway.

Or at least don’t eat them all the time.

Water

“Stay hydrated”.

You probably hear it all the time, but it’s true. You need water. We all do.

  • Especially with a busy schedule like yours. 

Water has a ton of benefits that your body needs. And without drinking enough, it can lead to dehydration. 

So make sure you STAY HYDRATED by drinking plenty of water every day. 

Monitor stress

Your daily routine can be stressful. But you can manage it.

  • Meditate
  • Deep breaths at different points of your day 
  • Spend time with your family 
  • Hang out with the boys 

Talk about your true feelings with a friend or family member. 

Even though studies show that you might find it hard to disclose your feelings. 

Don’t pay attention to what society says about you being “strong”. 

Your mental health is just as important as anyone else’s. 

And you should not be afraid to ask for help if you need to.
