Being a health advocate for your family and community is one of the most meaningful things you can do. It doesn’t require a medical degree or a big platform. It starts with what you already know, and the people already around you.

Starting at home

Your family is the easiest place to begin. You don’t need to schedule a formal “health talk.” Just work it into normal moments, like during mealtimes, car rides, or a WhatsApp message. Share things you’ve learned, recommend a good article, ask how someone’s feeling.

The key is not being preachy about it. Nobody wants to be lectured by a family member. Keep it light, genuine, and judgment-free. If you’re genuinely curious about how someone is doing, they’ll feel it.
You also have to live it. If you’re advising people to cut back on junk food while eating a bag of crisps, it won’t land. Your habits speak louder than anything you say.
Small things help too, for example group walks, cooking a healthy meal together, texting a relative to check in on them. Consistency matters more than grand gestures.

When people push back (and they will)

This is the part most people tend to not really know how to navigate. When you try to encourage healthier habits, it’s very likely that some people will roll their eyes, ignore you, or even get defensive. That’s normal.

Don’t take it personally, and don’t force it. The goal isn’t to win an argument. Plant a seed, step back, and let people come to their own conclusions. Over time, they notice your consistency. They see you exercising and feeling good. They come back with questions.

If someone in your community resists a health idea you’ve shared, don’t dig in. Acknowledge their view, leave the door open, and keep showing up.

Health advocate in your community

This one might seem a little more intimidating, due to the fact that it’s people you don’t really know.  But, it’s nothing you can’t handle. You just need need a little help.

Search for groups you can join.  Like local groups that focus on health. If you’re in groups like Whatsapp group. You can share news about health there, with your community including updates. Also, support stores or spots that sell healthy meal options, by buying from them. It will go a long way. Talk to community leaders about things that need to be improved  in the community, regarding health. Or share ideas you know can change things for the better.

It’s even better if you’re a community leader. You can bring up

  • Group saturday morning jogs
  • Runs
  • Or other types of workouts.

Ask others to join in. You can tell parents in your community to invite their children, or friends to activities. You can even make it more fun by including small prizes people can win.

Also, be a guide by helping others find good health services.

Quick tips

  • Don’t try to do it all at once, it’s important that you start small.
  • Share health apps or websites with people like (Medspurs✨) to others.
  • Be patient with how things go. It might  take a little to see changes.
  • Pick something that you like, such as food or exercise.
