I used to put protein powder in my coffee. I bought protein cereal, protein chips, and protein ramen. I tracked my grams in an app and felt guilty on the days I did not hit 140. “More protein is better” — I had believed that for years.
Then, on July 31, a major scientific review came out that forced me to reconsider everything.

The Review That Broke the Protein Narrative
Researcher Dudley Lamming and his team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison reviewed more than 350 studies on protein and aging, published in the journal Cell Press Blue. Their conclusion is the exact opposite of what the wellness industry has been selling: for most sedentary adults, eating less protein may support healthier aging — and could even extend lifespan.
In one rodent study, rats that ate around the minimum protein requirement lived more than 50% longer than rats eating about double that amount. That is not a small difference.
Now, before the gym crowd closes this tab: the finding is not “protein is bad.” It is “protein in excess — for people who do not actually need it — may be doing more harm than good.”
Protein Is Everywhere Now — And That Is the Problem
Here is how I ended up eating 140 grams a day without thinking about it. Protein is no longer just in meat, eggs, and beans. It is now added to:
- Lattes — collagen and protein powders added to coffee
- Cereal — “protein-packed” breakfast bowls
- Chips and crisps — protein snacks marketed to gym-goers
- Ramen and pasta — protein-enriched versions of everything
- Water — yes, protein water exists now
A 2025 survey by the International Food Information Council found that 70% of U.S. adults actively try to eat protein. High-protein diets were the most popular diet in America for the third year in a row. And this year, the U.S. dietary guidelines moved protein recommendations up to 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight — nearly double the old 0.8 g/kg recommendation.
Everyone is telling us to eat more. But the science behind aging is telling us the opposite for people who barely move.
The Hormone That Explains It: FGF21
Here is the biology in plain English. When your protein intake drops, your body releases a hormone called FGF21. FGF21 does something remarkable: it signals your body to burn fat as fuel instead of storing it.
“It essentially increases thermogenesis in your adipose tissue, so you do not just store fat, but actually burn it as fuel,” Lamming told ABC News.
That may explain why human trials found that people who lowered their protein intake lost weight and body fat and improved their fasting blood sugar — even while eating more total calories. Mouse studies also found that animals with elevated FGF21 lived longer than typical mice.
There is a second pathway too. Lower protein intake dampens a growth signal called mTORC1. When mTORC1 is less active, cells stop multiplying and shift into repair mode — recycling damaged parts instead of just growing. That repair activity is closely linked to slower aging.
The 3 Amino Acids That Matter Most
Not all protein is equal when it comes to this effect. The review zeroed in on three specific amino acids: methionine, isoleucine, and valine.
These are highest in:
- Meat — especially red meat and chicken
- Fish — all seafood
- Dairy — milk, cheese, yogurt, whey
- Eggs — the whites are packed with them
Studies in mice found that restricting just these amino acids — without restricting total protein — produced a similar anti-aging effect to limiting protein overall. Researchers at Nottingham University are now planning human trials on this exact question.
Are You Actually Active Enough for 1.6 g/kg?
This is the question I had to ask myself honestly — and the one most headlines skip. The new 1.2–1.6 g/kg guidance is not wrong. It just assumes you are active. Here is the reality check:
- You exercise most days (or lift weights 3+ times a week): you likely need 1.2–1.6 g/kg. Keep your protein. The review explicitly says active people benefit from it.
- You walk a little and sit most of the day: you are probably fine at 0.8 g/kg — about 51 grams for a 140-pound person. That is one chicken breast and a serving of beans.
- You are over 60: do NOT restrict protein. Read the caveat below first.
Here is the uncomfortable data point: a study of national health data found that adults who met exercise guidelines ate about 82 grams of protein a day. Adults who did not meet the guidelines still ate about 79 grams. Even sedentary people are already near the recommended amount — and many of us were adding protein-boosted products on top of that without thinking.
The Caveat Every Headline Skipped
If you are over 60, please read this before you change anything. Aging causes sarcopenia — a slow, steady loss of muscle and strength. For older adults, eating enough protein and doing strength training is one of the best tools to slow that loss. Protein restriction research in this group points the other way.
The same goes for:
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women — higher needs, talk to your doctor
- People recovering from illness, injury, or surgery — protein helps repair tissue
- People actively losing weight — protein protects muscle while you cut calories
- People with kidney or liver disease — get individual advice before changing anything
My Honest Numbers
I am 31, I lift weights 3–4 days a week, and I was eating about 140 grams of protein a day — roughly 1.8 g/kg. I am on the active side of this debate, so I am not a candidate for aggressive restriction.
But here is what I noticed when I looked honestly at my day: my “real food” protein — chicken, eggs, yogurt, beans — was already around 100 grams. The extra 40 grams were coming from protein powder, protein bars, and protein-boosted snacks. That is the protein-maxxing layer, and it is exactly the layer this research calls into question.
What I Am Changing (And What I Am Not)
- I stopped protein powder in my coffee. That was pure “I read it on a label” protein.
- I dropped protein cereal and protein ramen. Fortified junk is not a health hack.
- I cut my supplements to one serving on workout days only. I do not need a shake on rest days. (This was already a theme for me — I wrote about why after the protein powder lead controversy.)
- I did NOT lower my whole-food protein. Meat, eggs, fish, dairy, and legumes stay. My training still needs them.
- I am eating more mindfully. Protein is a nutrient, not a competition. The goal is never to be deficient — it is to avoid pointless excess.
The Bottom Line
The wellness world spent five years convincing us that more protein is always better. This review is the first major pushback, and it comes with 350 studies behind it. The science is not saying protein is bad. It is saying: protein is not a “more is better” nutrient for everyone — and for sedentary adults who already eat enough, those protein-fortified lattes and snacks may be doing nothing useful at all.
Before you reach for another protein product, ask the question the researchers want you to ask: how much protein does my body actually need — and am I actually active enough to need more?
That single question would have saved me months of protein-maxxing.
