Consistency is easy when life is going well. The real test is what happens when it’s not, when stress, illness, loss, or unexpected chaos hit. This is when most health habits fall apart, not because people stop caring, but because they haven’t built habits that can survive difficulty. But, with the right health tips, it’ll be easier to stay consistent with your health goals.

The floor habit: your non-negotiable minimum
A “floor habit” is the absolute minimum version of your healthy routine that you commit to doing even on the worst days. It’s not your ideal habit. it’s the thing you can still manage when everything else has gone wrong. If your usual routine is a 30-minute run, your floor habit might be, walk to the end of the street and back. If you normally eat well-planned meals, your floor habit might be, eat at least one piece of fruit today.
The floor habit exists to prevent the “I’ve broken my streak, so I might as well give up” spiral. You haven’t broken anything. You did the floor version. Tomorrow you can build back up.
Decide your floor habits now, before the tough times arrive.
Health tips to stay consistent through tough times
Stay positive without pretending
It helps to keep a realistic but forward-facing mindset. Not “everything is fine” when it clearly isn’t, but “this is hard and I can still get through it.” The self-talk matters. What you repeat to yourself during difficult periods either reinforces your resilience or undermines it.
You can try saying positive things to yourself.
Such as:
- Things will get better
- I will overcome
- Help will come
- I can get through this
- I’m stronger than this problem
You’re not deluding yourself. Instead, you’re keeping a healthy mind through it all.
Keep showing up, even imperfectly
A short walk, five minutes of stretching, one healthy meal, a glass of water, these things still count. They maintain the identity of someone who takes care of their health, even when circumstances make the full routine impossible.
Take some time to rest
Dealing with tough times still requires energy. You need energy to be able to scale through. So, make sure you get enough sleep, take breaks, and relax.
Eat good food
You need to eat healthy meals that will fuel you up. Not foods or snacks that won’t offer any nutrients. When you go through tough times, good and healthy, can you stay strong?
Eat foods that’ll boost your immune system, like
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Oranges
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Green vegetables
Avoid eating too much of these foods:
- Cookies
- Doughnuts
- Fried foods
And taking sugary drinks or beverages.
Foods like this make you gain too much weight, cause they’re high in calories.
So, you might end up taking in more calories than you burn.
Move your body every day
A short walk, stretching, or doing a few minutes of yoga can help you during tough times.
Go offline
Take some time off social media a little.
Seeing people live their “best lives” might not help you. It can lead to all sorts of things like:
- Comparison
- Getting more stressed
- And depression
Therapy
Consider getting some professional help, such as seeing a therapist.
- But if you can’t afford to, you can still get some help for free.
Like watching videos online and following certain creators that talk about mental health, and being better.
- It’ll feel like free therapy.
