Discipline in fitness and diet is not something you either have or do not. It is built through the right systems. The people who show up consistently are not always more motivated than you. They have usually just set up their lives in ways that make consistency easier.
Stop waiting for the right mood
This is one very common mistake a lot of people make.
- They work with their vibes
- Or feelings
Which you can’t sustain. You can’t build discipline in your fitness, and diet journey, based on that. The best workouts are usually the ones you did, when you didn’t feel like. Besides, there is a feeling of pride you get when you actually got up to workout, and finish. No one needs to say too much, you’re already building discipline.
You’d know when someone is building discipline, when they do a necessary thing even if they didn’t feel like it.
- You get up every morning to run or walk, without repeating the alarm.
- Or you stepped in to the shop and chose to buy only fruits, and veggies no sugar.
Even if you would’ve rather slept in, or bought packs of your favorite cookies. That’s the power, that’s the strength and that’s the discipline.
Think of the results
Let’s face it, that dream body, and health, is kinda cool. And you know that you want it. You want to look fit, healthy, and hot. No shame in that. So why not use that.
- Let it be a reason you walk out that door to go run or jog.
- Or the reason you pick eggs, chicken and vegetables, over a bag of chips, and fries.
The fact that you finally,
- Fit into clothes you like
- Take the stairs without feeling like the air in the room isn’t enough
- See some muscles and not rolls of fat
Is a feeling worth fighting for.
Maybe everything listed here is not what you’re aiming for. That’s also fine. You know what your goals are, go after them.
Remember,
- It’s the endgame
- The journey
- Discipline
- The life
Apply the “I’m choosing to” mindset
Not the “i can’t” mindset in your diet.
You’re in control here. You are choosing to make the decision to pick a healthier meal than some fast fatty snack. It’s not some sad journey of “ohh I can’t have a cookie, I’m not allowed to”. It can start to feel tiring, and frustrating. So, don’t put yourself in such an unnecessary situation.
You can choose to eat a cookie because, yeah you can. But you also choose to always eat them in moderation. Or prepare healthier ones for yourself.
This small difference can help you build discipline with your diet. And your fitness routine too.
Don’t see Fitness as a hobby
It is a requirement. Not “some” activity.
Think of it like,
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Clothing
- And cash
These are things we need to live a good life. So, why can’t fitness be a part of it?
If you want to build discipline in your fitness, put some respect on it. Let it a non-negotiable thing you do every week.
You don’t need to go hard all the time
Everyday is not good vibes, and energy. Don’t expect to always be in “workout mode”
There will be days where you feel groggy, uninspired, and just plain. But still, you should do what you got to do.
Because, you don’t need to go hard everyday. You just got to show up. Don’t use these feelings as some sign to not go to the gym. Or workout in your bedroom. But, just get up.

Design your environment to make discipline easier
Your environment shapes your behaviour more than willpower does.
If healthy food is visible and accessible in your kitchen, you will eat it. If junk food is not there, you cannot eat it. If your workout clothes are laid out the night before, you are more likely to train. If your gym bag is packed and by the door, the barrier to going is lower. If your phone is charged and your workout playlist is ready, getting started is easier.
You do not need to rely on discipline to eat well if your kitchen supports good eating. You do not need to force yourself to exercise if your environment removes most of the friction. Set things up so the good choice is the easy choice, and discipline becomes far less effortful.
Always stick to the plan.
- Birthday coming up? Stick to the plan.
- Aunty is having a cookout? Stick to the plan
- Brother’s wedding has an all you can eat buffet? Stick to the plan
- It’s your birthday? Stick to the plan
- Going out with the guys or girls? Stick to the plan
This is not because you can’t have fun.
- But about you having all the fun, but in a strategic way.
By,
- Practicing moderation, while enjoying the moment
- Remembering your journey.
- And building discipline.
Apply these tips, and watch how things change for you.
