Hitting your 40s does not mean your fitness journey is over. In many ways, it is just getting started properly. But your body has genuinely changed, and the approach that worked in your 20s and 30s may not serve you as well now. That is not a problem. It is just information you need.

Being fit and healthy has benefits and can help you in many ways by:

Lowering your risk of having serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.

You’d have more energy to do things and think better, and quicker nii

Your mood will get better because exercising regularly can keep you from getting stressed out, reduce anxiety, and even depression.

So, you see, moving your body regularly helps you beyond your physical appearance.

What changes in 40s and why it matters

For women, the 40s often bring the beginning of perimenopause, the transition period before menopause. Oestrogen starts to decline, which affects body fat distribution (more fat tends to gather around the belly), bone density, muscle retention, and how well you recover from exercise.

For men, testosterone naturally begins to decline from around the mid-30s onwards. By the 40s, this decline is more noticeable and affects muscle mass, fat distribution, energy, and recovery time.
Both men and women in their 40s tend to lose muscle faster than in earlier decades if they do not actively work to keep it. This is the main reason strength training becomes more important, not less, as you get older. So, understanding these changes means you can train for them rather than just pushing harder and wondering why things feel different.

Fitness after 40: Exercises that will help you get fit.

Man and woman outside working out. Fitness over 40

Brisk walking: It’s a low-impact exercise, goes easy on the joints, so it’s generally safe for people. And, especially great for people who love to walk or don’t have a gym to go to.

Swimming: You’ll be having a fun time, whilst you’re getting a good full-body workout, that is gentle on your joints.

Going to the pool to swim is not only for certain age groups, but for EVERYONE, it’s a great way to build your fitness after 40, keep in shape, and hang out with the kids or family and friends.

Weight training: Lifting weights helps a lot, especially if you’re over the age of forty. It’s going to help you stay fit and strong.

Weight lifting or strength training helps you build your muscles and strength, and even increases your metabolism as you get older.

The farmers carry: This is a functional training exercise that works 25 muscles at the same time. Which is cool.

It’s a great exercise. It is time to be efficient and easy to do.

The farmer’s carry is an exercise that mimics everyday activities like carrying groceries after shopping, or moving your luggage. It’s a very doable exercise that can help you build functional strength.

You don’t need the gym before you do it. If you have a heavy bag at home, you can do it.

It can help you build strength and muscle. But, not just that, it’s also going to help you work on your balance, and if you want that cardio effect, it can keep your heart nice and strong.

Keep moving:

  • Take the stairs
  • Not the elevator
  • stroll around your area regularly
  • Don’t drive to the store
  • Stand up when you’ve sat for a while
  • Pace when you make calls,
  • Match in place now and then while watching TV.

Flexibility training: It’s so important to maintain mobility as you get older; it can keep parts of your body strong, and also keep up with your kids. You need to keep your joints moving, so you don’t accumulate aches and pains.

Doing flexibility exercises can help you manage arthritis, as it can slow you down.

Stretching helps you maintain good flexibility and blood flow, makes your mood better, and even makes physical activity much easier to do.

So, don’t sleep on it and go stretch right now.

Tips A Lot Of People Don’t Know About Being Fit After 40

There is something you need to know:

Being fit after 40 isn’t only about working out hard or running for miles; it’s also in the way you eat, how well you drink water, your stress levels, and your sleep schedule.

All these things may seem little or not that deep, but they very much are. They’re the things that make so much difference in your health, and as you grow older.

At this age, you can’t afford to have an “anyhow” sleep schedule, eat whatever and however, forget to drink water, and sit all day.

Because it’s different this time. There were things you did in your 20s that and could probably get away with, but it’s different now, and you need to know this.

It’s great to lift weights and build your muscles, but you also need to be mindful of the foods you eat and how you live your life.

The bottom line

40 and fit? Oh YES. Totally possible. What you’ve got to do is do some resistance training, get some cardio in, and work on your mobility. Also, prioritize getting enough sleep every night, this is very important, at least 7 hours of sleep every night.
