Remote work has genuine benefits, flexibility, no commute, and more control over your day. However, it also has genuine health risks that are easy to miss because they accumulate quietly rather than announcing themselves.

Some of these things might build up

  • Laziness
  • Procrastination
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Irregular sleep patterns

It can also affect your eyes, due to excess screen time. You’ve got to take care of yourself, even while working.

The invisible movement you’ve lost

When you worked in an office, you were getting in some good amount of steps and moving your body without trying. The walking to the train or bus, climbing stairs between floors, moving between meeting rooms, walking to get lunch. This could easily add up to 3,000 to 5,000 steps daily without a single intentional workout. But, working from home removes almost all of that. You might roll from bed to desk, stay there for eight hours, and move to the sofa, which only gets you little steps, compared to the movement an office day would have included. This is one of the biggest hidden health risks of remote work, and it can build up over the years.

What you can do to fix this, is to start adding intentional movement into your day to add up to your daily steps. A morning walk before you start. A walk at lunch. A rule that phone calls are taken standing or walking. Movement breaks every hour.

Protect your eyes

Always take breaks when you work. Long screen hours can eye strain, headaches, and dry eyes. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, which is every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Wear blue light glasses if helpful. Take genuine breaks away from any screen, not switching from work to phone.

Sleep early

You might even need to sleep earlier than most people. Being in front of the screen and working can take a lot of energy. You task your brain more, so make you get enough sleep each night.

Eat healthy meals

Prepare nutritious meals and snacks to keep your mind and body healthy. And avoid taking too much sugar and caffeine.

It cause things like:

  • Energy crashes
  • And reduced productivity

Don’t forget to drink water too. Even if you work from home, you still need to drink enough. If you become dehydrated, you could develop headaches, and not be able to work well.

Let work hours be work hours

You need to create boundaries between work, and your personal life. So, you don’t burnout. Work when the time comes, and rest when it is time to rest. Don’t be checking emails or messages when you should be resting. If not, you’ll become overworked, and get stressed out.

Create a “for work only” space

Find a place that is only for work. You can create an area in the house, meant for working.

  • Keep it clutter-free
  • And let it smell good

It’ll help you increase your focus, and productivity. Working remotely offers freedom, and flexibility. But, it also kind of makes it easier to live in a not-so healthy way. It is not very difficult to adopt some bad habits that affects your health. However, the right health tips for remote workers, can help prevent that. The point is, making money is great , but good health is most important.
